We are a team of physicians and medical students from the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences dedicated to providing medical and psychological forensic evaluations for survivors of torture and political violence who are seeking asylum here in Western New York.
To date, the HRI at UB has served over 55 clients from over 30 countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, El Salvador, Rwanda, Afghanistan, and Angola. While asylum cases can take many years to be processed, the legal affidavits produced by our services have already begun to facilitate successful asylum applications.
Medical students serve an important role for the Human Rights Initiative! Our organization trains a number of medical students each year to serve as medical scribes. Our medical scribes serve as an integral component to documenting findings from the forensic evaluation and preparing the medical-legal affidavit with the clinician. The final document will ultimately be included by the lawyer into the client's asylum application.
