HeartSmart is a volunteer organization comprised of first and second year medical students from the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Each month, HeartSmart volunteers travel to elementary schools in Buffalo and the surrounding districts to educate students (mostly 3rd to 5th graders) on the heart and heart health. Our volunteers teach lessons centered around four stations, with an overall emphasis on healthy habits such as physical activity, nutritious diets, and abstaining from smoking.
The four stations of activities include:
• Interaction with a human cadaver heart and lungs
• Learning to take pulses and use stethoscopes to hear heart sounds
• Instruction and a hands-on activity about atherosclerosis
• Learning anatomy and how to read a chest X-ray
